Saturday Showdown: Doughnut Tread on Me

Today I’m presenting the first post in a new series: the Saturday Showdown! I’ve done some face-off style posts before, comparing different cities or ski mountains, so today I start with something a little sweeter and a lot more artery-clogging: doughnuts.

I’m no doughnut expert. When I was little, I would get a chocolate glazed doughnut and chocolate glazed cruller from Dunkin Donuts whenever we went (clearly they’re so different and I needed two of the same thing), so my knowledge of doughnuts is limited. If you’re looking for somebody who really knows doughnuts, head on over to The Donut Hunter for a good guide to doughnuts around the country.

Today on Saturday Showdown I’ll compare four different doughnut “venues:” the Holy Donut in Portland, Frosty’s in Brunswick, Federal Donuts in Philadelphia, and Tougas Farms in Northborough, MA.

The Holy Donut: If you’re looking for whacky donut flavors, this is the place to go. It’s also great for gluten-free people as their doughnuts are made from Maine potatoes or sweet potatoes. I’ve only had a couple of doughnuts from here, so my experience has been limited. They were my first potato doughnuts, so they are pretty different than your run-of-the-mill doughnut and weren’t quite what I was expecting but still something adventurous.

Frosty'sFrosty’s: Frosty’s gets a lot of hype at Bowdoin. People like to trek down Maine Street at four in the morning to be the first outside of Frosty’s when they open, and I’ll admit to having done this a couple of times. Frosty’s opens at four and closes once they’ve sold all their doughnuts for the day, so they don’t have any hard and fast hours. Although at first I was worried that I only thought they were so good because I ate them so early in the morning and anything would probably taste good then, I’ve had them at normal hours of the day as well, and they’ve never been disappointing. All of the types I’ve tried (maple frosted and chocolate glazed, mainly) are a good mix of fluffy and caky and perfectly flavored. If Frosty’s has already closed for the day and you’re looking to try one, there sometimes will even be some at the Bowdoin Cafe if you’re lucky.

Tougas Farms: One of my favorite parts of apple picking in high school wasn’t the apples at all but the doughnuts (gotta love America…). I went apple picking with student council once and everybody was talking about the apple cider doughnuts the entire time we were there. I didn’t know what the big fuss and half-hour long line were about until I tried one. The doughnuts aren’t huge, which is nice, but looking back they were caked in sugar and the small size couldn’t make up for that. It’s been a while since I’ve been to Tougas, but if I were to go back I’d be sure to not miss the doughnuts (and maybe also eat an apple this time around).

FederalFederal Donuts: Heading a bit further south, Federal Donuts in Philly offers donuts, coffee, and chicken! They make both hot fresh and fancy doughnuts everyday. By the time my sister, her boyfriend, and I got there, they were pretty much out of fancy ones, so we all split some Indian Cinnamon and Vanilla Lavender doughnuts which were amazing. The flavors were something new and really incredible, getting me out of my chocolate glazed comfort zone, and the hot ones were so warm and fresh.

And the winner isFederal Donuts! While I’m partial to Frosty’s, Federal Donuts was absolutely worth the visit. Their unique flavors, good texture, and freshness make them incredible, and I definitely recommend a visit if you’re in Philly. I hope you all enjoy this new feature.   1. Next time you’re in boston you HAVE to check out Union Square donuts in Somerville. They’re miles better than frostys.


  2. And now I’m officially starving. Cake doughnuts have to be the American food that I can’t get in London that I miss the most. Why oh why don’t Brits like cake doughnuts?!
